Former Indian captain Rohit Sharma shared a heartfelt note to his counterpart Angelo Mathews, who is retiring from Test cricket after the first Test against Bangladesh.

Angelo Mathews’ Illustrious Test Career and Retirement

Former Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews announced his retirement a month ago, with his farewell match being the first Test against Bangladesh, currently live at Galle. The 38-year-old had an illustrious career in Test cricket, playing over 119 matches for his country. He has scored over 8,167 runs at an average of 44.62, with 16 hundreds and 45 fifties, making him the third-highest run-scorer for Sri Lanka in the longer format.

The major highlight of his decade-long Test career was the 2014 series win against England as captain, leading a young team. Mathews did the unthinkable by defeating England 1-0 in that series. Moreover, leading by example, Mathews scored 160 runs and took a 4-wicket haul in the winning Test. He was adjudged player of the series after scoring 304 runs in the two-match Test series

Meanwhile, India’s star batter Rohit Sharma shared a heartfelt note for his longtime counterpart Angelo Mathews on his retirement. Rohit recalled their rivalry starting from their Under-19 days.

"Hey Angie, congratulations on your fantastic Test career. Tomorrow is your last Test match. I just want to wish you and the team the very best. Over the years, we've had some really good battles right from our Under-19 days till now."

Rohit also highlighted Mathews’ contribution to the Sri Lankan team over the years.

"You've been a true servant to your nation, and I'm pretty sure everyone back at home appreciates what you've done for your country. It's something which has not been achieved by many people, what you have achieved, so congratulations again on that,” said Rohit.

Furthermore, Rohit Sharma wished Mathews and his family the very best for the future.

"And moving forward, yes, I just want to wish you and your family the very best. Happy retirement, enjoy it, and we'll see you on the other side. All the best, bro" he added.

Angelo Mathews’ farewell Test hasn’t started well, as Bangladesh dominated Day 1 at Galle after winning the toss.
