West Indies will take on Pakistan in the first ODI on Friday, August 08. The hosts suffered a 2-1 series defeat in the T20I series. Of late, the Windies' form has been extremely patchy in both the white-ball formats. In some defeats, the hosts have even failed to put up a fight before going down. With the ODI World Cup 2027 in two years' time, the West Indies would be hoping to do well in the upcoming three matches against Pakistan.
Head coach Darren Sammy stated in the pre-conference that he told his players to take this series as preparation for the ODI World Cup. The hosts failed to qualify for the previous ODI World Cup 2023 held in India. This time, they would be eager not to repeat the same mistake.
Meanwhile, Pakistan has managed to show decent form in the ODI format. While they were out in the group stage of the Champions Trophy 2025 event, their form has been decent in ODIs in the past year.

WI vs PAK: Match Preview
Pakistan's unpredictability was on full display in the preceding T20I series, as in one game, they performed well, and in the other game, they faltered. One never knows which Pakistan will turn up for the first ODI. Under new head coach Mike Hesson, the Asian team would want stability and consistent results. The three ODIs against the Windies give the Men in Green a chance to try out different combinations and test the bench strength.
With Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan & Abdullah Shafique back in the 50-over setup, the visitors' batting line-up looks strong. In the bowling, Shaheen Afridi will lead the attack, with support from Abrar Ahmed, Naseem Shah, and Hasan Ali.
On the other hand, the West Indies side looks formidable on paper, with Shai Hope leading, who is in a rich vein of form. Apart from the skipper, Brandan King and Rostan Chase have also contributed well. Bowling is a bit of a worry for Windies, with middle phase bowlers not able to support the new ball pacers Shamar Joseph and Jayden Seales. It is this aspect that the hosts would be keen to do well.
