Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar was born on 24th April, 1973 to Ramesh Tendulkar and Rajni Tendulkar in the Dadar neighborhood of Mumbai, Maharashtra. He has three half-siblings: half-brothers Nitin and Ajit and half-sister Savita. He is the youngest of the four. He belonged to a culturally rich middle-class family.
Sachin Tendulkar did his schooling at Sharadashram Vidyamandir High School in Dadar. He was a fan of both cricket and tennis from an early age. He was often sighted wearing a tennis headband and wristband and also carrying a tennis racquet, which displayed his love for the game. His elder brother, Ajit, introduced him to Ramakant Achrekar in Shivaji Park in Dadar, who was his first cricket coach. Tendulkar holds Ramakant in high regard as the man who shaped his love for the game and helped him hone his skills for the same. His early idol was the legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar, who was a source of inspiration and encouragement for him during his formative years.
Tendulkar married Anjali Mehta on May 24, 1995, after dating for 5 years. Their first child, Sara Tendulkar, was born in 1997, and their second child, Arjun Tendulkar (now a cricketer himself after his father), was born in 1999. His family often accompanied him on overseas tours.
Tendulkar’s primary residence is Dorab Villa, 19-A Perry Cross Road, Bandra, Mumbai. It is a sprawling three-story mansion over 6,000 sq ft and is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Bandra. He bought it in 2007 for a huge sum of Rs 39 crore and redesigned it to be his luxurious abode. Amenities include a private gym, personal quarters for family, a prayer room, garden areas and a trophy room, among others. He also owns a farmhouse in Lonavala, a Kohinoor Square apartment in Mumbai, and other properties abroad.
The Master Blaster is a fervent admirer of performance cars. Being the brand ambassador for BMW India, it is no surprise that the German automotive company is his favorite brand. Some of his collections include the BMW i8, M5 (F10), X5 M, 7-series and the 30 Jahre M5. His other collections include a Nissan GT-R, Ferrari 360 Modena (albeit sold off in 2010), Fiat Palio, Volvo S80, and Porsche Boxster. He loves driving the cars himself, especially on highways or away from the public eye.
As an aesthete of horology, Tendulkar is the owner of the rare and luxe Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Sachin Tendulkar Limited Edition, which was released in 2008 and only had 300 pieces ever made. He also owns a Rolex Daytona, Richard Mille, TAG Heuer, and a Hublot Big Bang. He was the brand ambassador of TAG Heuer back in the early 2000s.
Tendulkar is a big fan of tennis. John McEnroe was his idol and inspiration growing up. But he is also an ardent follower of football. He was the co-owner of the ISL club Kerala Blasters from 2014 until 2018, when he sold off his stake in the club. He is an admirer of the Premier League club Manchester United and was the Indian ambassador for Man U Opus in India. He also participates in football charity matches and is known for playing table tennis and badminton as well.
A less-talked-about side of the Little Master is his philanthropy. He, along with his wife, founded the Sachin Tendulkar Foundation, which helps underprivileged children with education, health and sports development across the country. He also donated generously to the PM Cares Fund during the COVID-19 pandemic. He helps develop sports training for children from the rural and tribal areas. He generously donated the whole of his Rajya Sabha salary to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund, and he does all of it without pomp and circumstance.
Some of the other interests of the legend include video games, listening to music, and traveling across wildlife parks and historical and cultural places. He is an avid enjoyer of books and loves reading biographies, including publishing his own autobiography, titled “Playing It My Way.”

The most prominent partnership of the maestro is with MRF, with whom he struck a ₹100+ crore deal to display their logo on his iconic bat. As mentioned earlier, he has been the brand ambassador of BMW India since 2012. He partnered with the renowned Swiss watch brand, Audemars Piguet, to launch his own limited edition watch in 2008. Other than these, he has also been a partner of Pepsi, Boost, Visa, Toshiba, Luminous Inverter and several other brands. He is well known for only endorsing the brands he personally uses and trusts.
Tendulkar’s cricketing career started with Ramakant Achrekar, who spotted his raw talent and helped him sharpen his skills in Shivaji Park, and that’s how the legend began. While 14, he made the headlines when he scored 326 not out in a school match, which caught the attention of the selectors. He made his legendary debut in first-class cricket for Bombay against Gujarat, in which he scored 100 (not out). This made him the youngest Indian player ever to score a century on debut in first-class cricket at merely 15 years of age.
Tendulkar made his first Test debut against Pakistan on November 15, 1989, in Karachi, which made him the youngest player to do so at the time. He made his ODI debut a month later on December 18, 1989, against the same archrivals in Gujranwala. He was known for his impeccable technique, excellent footwork and timed shot selections. He was very calm and collected while on the pitch and only let his bat do the talking.
Sachin never had an official stint in the India A setup, but he had displayed some incredible performances in the 1988-89 Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy and Irani Trophy where he often scored against the best domestic bowlers. In fact, his performances were so exquisite that Dilip Vengsarkar wanted him to be a part of the senior team at just 16 years of age. So, technically, his youth started from the senior team itself, which speaks volumes about his legacy. His first century came merely a year later in 1990, when he scored 119 (not out) against England in a Test held at the Old Trafford, Manchester.
Tendulkar was first appointed as a captain in 1996, at just 23 years of age. He was the Test captain of India till 1998 and played 25 matches. He was an ODI captain from 1996 to 1997. While he arguably is the greatest batsman of all time, he wasn’t the best captain of the Indian cricket team. His stint was marred with a struggling bowling attack, and the dual burden of leading with the bat and captaincy was not the most suitable role for him. He eventually stepped down and handed the captaincy over to Sourav Ganguly.
Tendulkar’s captaincy period, although nothing to write home about, did have a few moments of brilliance. He led India to victory against England in his first match as a Test captain. He won the Titan Cup trophy in 1996 against Australia in the final. He also led India to the 1996 Cricket World Cup semi-final against Sri Lanka, where India eventually crashed out. He did score a 137 against Sri Lanka in the group stage, which was the highlight of his tournament.
Tendulkar was a part of Mumbai Indians throughout his relatively brief IPL journey. He captained the side from 2008 to 2010, when the team made the playoffs twice. He scored 2334 runs in 78 matches for Mumbai Indians, with an average of 34.84. He scored his only IPL century against CSK in 2010. After retiring as a player from the team in 2013, he became a mentor for the team and continues to do so even to this day. He helped Rohit Sharma grow as a captain, who later went on to win 5 IPL titles as a captain.
The Master Blaster’s net worth is estimated to be ~$150 million (Rs 1,250 crore). Although he doesn’t earn directly from cricket anymore, he had a hefty salary back in the day. He has endorsed numerous brands and continues to do so, and it is estimated that he charges around Rs 7-12 crore annually for the same. He also has multiple investments and business ventures, including co-ownership of SMAAASH, a sports entertainment company. He is an investor in real estate and owns numerous luxury assets, which boosts his net worth by a lot.
