Stampede Fallout Puts Chinnaswamy’s Future in Doubt
Bengaluru and cricket are inseparable, as the love and passion the city has for the game is unmatched. However, that unmatched passion turned into tragedy during the IPL victory parade held by RCB on June 4, which resulted in 11 lives lost in a stampede outside the stadium.
This incident raised serious concerns; it was deemed unfit for major events by the Justice John Michael Cunha Commission, restricting the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium from hosting further matches..
As a result, the Maharaja Trophy 2025 was relocated to the stadium in Mysuru, after the government declined permission to host the tournament in Bengaluru. Meanwhile, Chinnaswamy Stadium has been named the primary host of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2026, with the semi-finals and final scheduled there. However, hosting the World Cup now hangs in the balance, as KSCA and BCCI have requested government approval.
